The Boykin Spaniel
The Boykin Spaniel, known for its floppy ears, rich brown wavy coat and generally hyper personality, is rightfully the state dog of South Carolina. Boykins, bred by South Carolina hunters to be hardworking bird dogs that were “small enough to not rock the boat,” got their name from Whit Boykin, a dog trainer from Camden, SC, who established the breed from an exceedingly well-behaved spaniel from Spartanburg with the unfortunate name of “Dumpy.” In 1984, Governor Richard W. Riley proclaimed the Boykin Spaniel as the official state canine with September 1st being known as “Boykin Spaniel Day.”
